It was in his smile

by Maria Francesca

It was in his smile.

She didn't see it
but it was in the way
he glanced at her
then glanced away.

It was in his step
and in the way he touched her shoulder -
and it was in the way
he saw
how much she didn't see.

It was in all in his smile:
the regret and the relief,
the sorrow and the reluctant anticipation
of freedom.

It was in the way he said hello
and meant goodbye.
