Stalemates

by Darren Swift

I stretched it so that
if lights were placed under
a skeined web would fan outwards
pinking the ceiling in
kaleidoscope grotesque

"Thinner" you said, so
I tugged the corners harder
forcing it over the cold
wood of the dining table
waiting for that moment.

Your heel pinched, the first
nail didn't hurt, no pain
until the third caught a vein
sending bright blood coursing
towards your hammer...

"See, I obviously do love you"
I said

"See, I obviously don't love you"
you said

and drove another nail through my sac
putting us right back where we started.

Good grief. You go away for a LONG time, and when you come back, you smack the pages with THIS! I hate that I love it.
