I watch

by Maria Francesca

I watch the news
and toss and turn all night
before rolling out of bed again in the morning
and running to the store to buy
flashlights
plastic sheeting
duct tape.

I watch people
and run out to buy books and magazines
that tell me how to understand
the human mind
body
heart.

I watch with eyes
that ingest
but studiously refuse to project.

I watch
and wonder
and worry
and plot my own survival.

I watch and fail
to understand
all that I see.

I listen
and hear nothing real.

I reach
and grasp nothing.

I watch
alone.

We may not be with you but everyone watches as you do some more and some less worried. Hang in there and take care.

I felt it. Not a good feeling, but I felt it. Good job.

You capture that surreal feeling I've been having about the events in the world. I can't even write about any of it at this point, so I am grateful for your voice, Maria.
