Choc Full of Promises

by Jeffrey Parren

This life is choc full
of promises that once
were burgeoning out of control
and that are now
without even the faintest
of residual hope.

You grow up
doing the things you want
and sometimes
the things you have to
but you get them done.

You go to school
to get to the next degree in life
and as you progress
so increase the responsibilities
and things to strive for.

Slowly the hopes dwindle
and the realities set in.

This is what life is going to be
because your choices
have led you here.

Sometimes here is enough.

Sometimes you never get here
and then the windows
start to close more frequently.

Being a famous sports player
or astronaut
or doctor
or pilot
or whatever dream youth provided
is over
before college even began for most.

And there are those people
that make it through
the easy years and the tough ones
without the hint of a clue
of what it is
they want to do.

I am one of those people.

I've been good at a few things
great at a couple at most
but the work ethic
has always kept me afloat.

I work harder than most
to make up for
what lacking ambition
has been gone for ages.

I have made it over 31 years
to still have no idea
what makes me truly happy.

Just as I thought I found it
life spit in my face
and sent me reeling.

Happiness
is a long word
with even bigger meaning.

Like trying to explain
why there is air.

I know Bill Cosby
has the answer
but I hope you catch
the metaphor.

I've always thought
life had so much in store for me
when it turns out
life doesn't make those decisions,
I do.

I'm just not so sure
what the question is.

Author's Note: I remember how I once thought anything was possible for me. Now I just wonder when I get to sleep on a bed again, or when I will not have to worry about how the bills will be paid if I take 3 days off in a row.

There are many who can't make it an lose it all. Then there are others who just barely make it from one paycheck to another. Hang it there.
