Children 2 by E. A. Pugh
I wake up early hair is a mess.
Coffee is a necessity.
When they stare at the T.V. it’s the best
It gives me a break to be alone, neglectfully.
One child does not like television.
He prefers to jump and run and sift though the tools
I cut his hair and he looks like a girl
leaving the curls around his face.
Little boy wears his sisters’ clothes
because I don’t like to shop
and because the clothing may fit for just a few months.
Last night he said,
“ I want boy pants! not polka dots!”
Well, I said
“boy clothes are boring”
As they grow they split into genders
some split natural and some split perhaps inspired by the dreaded television.
But, I would rather him not help me cook bacon
Here he is now.
Making a plan for the future.
He will hide in the big moving box as he did last night and jump out
to surprise father.
Three and a half year old boy usually hides in the same spot
But we act like it is the first time and show surprise.
Here she comes pulling the chair up
to the computer
“I want a girl game,”
she demands.
