this is the cross

by Maria Francesca

this is the cross
this is the price
this is our noble sacrifice

and you should be thankful
for what we do -
we'd all be so much better off without you

but God made us clean
and God made us right
and God made us perfect in His holy sight

so you've got to suffer -
you must bear the scars
so you can be special the way that we are

admit you're a sinner
admit that you're wrong
admit you're unholy -
you've got to be strong

'cause you're saved if you suffer
you're blessed if you bleed
so don't try to stop us;
we know what you need

because this is our cross
and this is your shame;
be worthy of us or be fed to the flames

this is our cross
and God's on our side
and save you or still you
at least we'll have tried.

Author's Note: A friend of mine was telling me about his upbringing, which was seasoned with large doses of both religion and abuse. It got me thinking about the harm that is done sometimes in the name of various religions. I in no way believe that religion creates wrong in the world, but that instead, people do wrong in its name, either out of evil or out of delusion.

I've just come back from church and read this, so here goes: I think it's a very touchy subject, and you were very brave and handled it very well. But reading your author's note I see that there's no mention of the good done in religion's name, which far outweighs the wrong. Kudos on an honest and heartfelt work of poetry. Oh, and the rythm is flawless.

a very understanding poem to write for your friend that speaks common language of devotees that could be used to keep someone down or to lift someone up.
