Before I Wake Up Forever by Jared OrlandoAnd with my arms reaching
Out over my head, it’s as if
I could feel the warmth of
The copper smog drifting
Over my eyes and
Right then I drew circles
Into the cloud with each fingertip,
And a storm-like history turned into
A vicious dripping, and I’m rising from my bed
As this new flood takes me through
The mist and foul winds
And the curtains burst into
Wildfire amongst the wind and
The rain and a fog and
with my hair tinged I call out
With words diverting into
Quarter notes upon a winding staff
Twisting, contorting, creating
A lariat around my neck
Tightening with each note
Each syllable, each crescendo a
Death wish and nature has
Come to make its mark on me
As the walls fall down with muffled whimpers
I’m suspended-
Weightless, lifeless, hopeless
And a cello belts out my final words
Black ravens take each corner of my mouth
Pulling; and before I wake up forever
I let out one more forced smile
