What It Said

by Jeffrey Parren

With the first words
scampering on the paper
so began the journey
into my mind
as I lit that lantern
before crawling
into the cave's opening
on the side of my head.

Once inside
I could fully stand
as if the small doorway
was to pay some homage
to the exploration
I was about to experience.

As I took light to the surroundings
I quickly found the walls
were made of bookshelves
but these books
I've never heard of before,
but somehow knew well.

There were books of poetry
books of fiction
books of non-fiction, too.

Photography books
art books
and all others.

They were the meat of me.

I opened a book
and hurried to a random page
to see what it said.

This poem
is what it said.

Owning books has always been important to me. I go back over things I've read and sometimes as I sit next to my shelves of books just seeing a title of a I've read will take me on voyage that possible some have never seen. You bring it all back to me.
