If... by Dan KastenIf I were to arrive on your doorstep as a stranger looking at his shoes
not unlike who I was at one time
would you address me any differently
if I were to take your hand on an empty night
grasp stretched past the shivering pulse of adrenaline
would you allow me to be a salve for your shaken soul
if I were to catch your tears and temper your anger
would you save for me that part of your charity
which you reserve for the loyal and comfortable
if I were to touch your skin while you slept
would your dreams create a whisper to file away
for those times that I am not in reach
if I were to speak to your eyes
at what point would they close,
become liquid to your will and draw breath
if I were to steal your scent and create a new brand that only we share
would you save a reminiscence for some cold day
when clouds and humanity command your presence to be elsewhere
if I were to tell you that I love you how far would you run
before you felt safe enough to look back
or would you move at all. 02/06/2011 Posted on 02/06/2011 Copyright © 2024 Dan Kasten
