Only We Know

by Chloe Sanders

Watching, waiting, wondering, whispering.
My head, my heart, my soul.
Like the energizer bunny I keep going,
Keep moving
even when I want nothing but to give up,
Quit.
Just stop everything
Sleep and never wake up
Rest my weary soul
My tired eyes
My broken heart
Do you ever really look at someone
Do you ever actually see
The dust filled wrinkles of the wise,
The calloused hands of the worker
The glistening eyes of the young
The leaking eyes of those who claim to be
Unfeeling
The bodies reaction to what the mind is too numb to process
Hurt so much
Cut so deep
We sew it up
And just keep
Keep on moving
Chugging along
Hiding the scars of our past
Under our clothes
Still, only we know
Only we know.
This invisible group of our wounded
We are on the battle field every day.
And our wounded hide,
Our dead are gone.
No one see’s what’s really wrong.
So this is my question for you.
If someone cries
And you don’t see it
Does that mean they never really cried at all?
Answer if you know the wounded, and remember the dead.
Answer, if only you know.
