#30 - Legacy (sonnet)

by Linda Fuller

Who will ring the bell that tolls earth’s end?
Who will light the candle, sing the dirge?
Daily, dire happenings portend
mankind’s headlong plunge to'ward the verge.
Helplessly we founder in the drink
lose horizon, can’t tell up from down
edging ever nearer to the brink.
Can it be predestined that we drown?

Though our path is treacherous and steep
it can lead to ruin or reprieve.
Will our children praise or will they weep?
Which will be the legacy we leave:
Humans were a beacon in the night.
Men sowed naught but death, despair and blight.
