Great Souls

by Dan Kasten

With lights out we became great souls
talking to an audience of smell and touch
propriety and honesty blended into a color placed somewhere
in another progression of colors beyond what my science can reference

and just one more joule of heat, one more foot candle of light
would have changed that perfect dynamic
and that precise moment when some flow of time stopped
dealt and sorted, announcing itself outside of nervous language

too polite to mention you knew the exact moment that I was humbled
a vulnerability I would only share while not looking into your eyes
disarmed and with the only wall necessary being within arms reach
to brace myself from weakened knees and quaking earth

as you traced my form with moisture and spirit
I could feel your energy transfer into me
a strong gentleness merging mind and body
a breathing in unison usually saved for moments in my private arrogance

with lights on and you a distant smile on my face
I can feel Doppler reflect on this latest red shift in the universe,
shut off his brain for the night, smile and comment in his journal that
this is exactly what he had been saying all along.

No one can argue you don't have the insight. This is just terrific.
