Solstice Ache by Alison McKenzieSnow crunches under my boots,
Startling the deer snuggled in for the night
In the tall, sleeping summer grasses
On the hill behind the house.
Graceful even in flight,
They ka-da leap, ka-da leap
Through the snowy crust
To safety in the undeveloped upper fields.
The full moon is eclipsed by the earth’s shadow,
Bringing a rare magic that I cannot see
But sense above the cloud-cover;
The first edge of the winter solstice
Sweeping It’s arm to welcome me
Onto the next.
I etch these into the annals of my soul,
This season’s solitude cradling
The echoes of aches
Long tucked in for the duration,
Stirring out of slumber and
Longing for release.
