I see your handwriting
on recipes that you always made
and can picture myself
there with you on those days
many times amazed
by the exact memory
you kept
so that preparing them
was always spot on
as you did not forget a step.

Many have tried to recreate
the mastery that you
always did with ease
but copying an artist
is seldom an easy task.

We are all destined
to fit into a niche or two,
or perhaps a niche of many
yet is still the one guidance
that leads us down the path
to our own sense of completion
and living up to
all that was necessary
to become that persona
that we were always
destined to be.

Yours was to be an incredible cook
both dinner and dessert
even a batch or two
of donuts or bread
that we made during
a family get-together
after first getting your Kitchen Aide.

Yours was to be an incredible mother
and that is exactly
what you did
for me
in every way.

And as I read your recipe
for Cocoa Fudge
I might just try again
the way you wrote
will always stick out to me
because you are the only one
to write the way you did.

I always noticed the intricacies
you managed in real time.
There was never careful planning
to how you were going to write
it just happened
and like that and many other things
you did flawlessly
you made look easy.

Everything for me has been
anything but
since you left
and not an easy day passes
without a thought your way
and the annual events
that were assumed to happen
just don't happen anymore
or don't feel the same.

I know.

Everything inevitably changes.

Everyone eventually dies.

I just cannot fathom
the rest of my life like this:
the days come and go
the holidays come and go

they're all
just another day.
