Black and Yellow Ingest

by Laura Doom

Nobody said it would be easy.

And it was, like taking Candy, from a baby
through to prematurity, the nobody
consumed by fire and brimming
with the confidence that comes with anonymity.

She graduated from the school
of battered fishwives and vinegarish chips;
no free lunch, no sundae service luxury
or trifling with the food of love,
just hunger driven, fast and hard.

She'll bite the hand that feeds her
habit, watch those bloated suckers
swallow every inch of pride
and make them eat their twisted words
until their appetites have gone to hell.

Maybe then she'll cry
for more, the candy floss
thrust down her throat
from that first day she died.

A shred of satyr scrapes
between her clench-clean teeth
to be smashed by the clenched fist
of irony that wrote her off
and circumscribed her epitaph:

You are what eats you.

...speaking of DNA all over a piece; this is cutting the truth down to size. bite-size pieces, eh? so much "real" to the 2nd power in this...and the lead into the juxtaposing line: the nobody consumed by fire and brimming with the confidence that comes with anonymity...way-more than cute.

Yes, I suppose we are what eats us. The well fed, by "the food of love", and the uneaten, do not possess a passion for understanding poetry like this. Still trying to get my mind around it...if I could it wouldn't be from Laura, and not nearly as interesting.

Food and hunger and being eaten... Wonderful tie-ins all around. I love the stanza just before the end that pent-up, verge-of-violence frustration... Amazingly scribed. No surprise.
