Stupor

by Alison McKenzie

So, of course I woke up in that stupor,
The one that comes from strange but vivid dreams,
The psyche’s desperate attempts
To bridge the gap between then and now,
And the slow realization upon awakening
That the world, or at least your own world,
Has shifted 90 degrees
And that, whatever comes next,
There is no turning back.

After it’s happened enough times in a life,
(By the way, how many times DOES this
Typically happen to others?)
The fact that life will go forward around you
Also slowly seeps into
The way things are going to fall into place now;
That, with or without you,
The business of getting on with it
IS going to continue.

Yes, you can stand on the sidelines while
The most recent changes can be digested,
But eventually it’ll be time
To join in once again –

Until then, life is going to feel very strange,
And there is no other way through it.

I feel like you walked into my head...

You had a bit of a night, too from the sound of it. Rhiannon said it better for me than I could.
