Fever

by David Neubauer

Have you ever felt your soul
oozing
out all your pores,
evaporating slowly to vacation abroad?
High Noon in Death Valley,
and you’re staggering
through the blistering heat
wrapped in your winter quilt,
wondering who turned the Sun off.
Then your brain whirrs up to speed again;
wondering which tissue paper really
IS the softest? What is that noise
in the background? Birdsong?
No, too tinny… maybe cooking? But it’s
three in the morning, who’d be cooking
NOW?
Too soft for a jackhammer,
too loud for a prayer...
Maybe the ringing
in your ear? If you close your eyes,
does it go away?
Nope, still there.
Heartbeat regularity,
dependability,

why can’t you sleep?
