Lullaby

by Amanda J Cobb

I lay by your side,
eyes tracing the ceiling in the dark,
listening to the breath
whoosh in and out
slowly, peacefully
both of us in sync.
You mumble in your sleep
and your hand moves,
brushing mine.
A brief squeeze,
a sleepy sigh,
and the whooshing resumes its cadence.
You didn't wake,
and that small gesture
is made all the more poignant
for its simple, unconscious sincerity.
I smile and close my eyes,
perfectly content.
