unexpectedly

by Angela Thomas

two little fingers walking like a thirsty
man through a desert up my back.
feet casually finding their way into
touching under the table. brushing

away strands of hair when they fall
in your face. i talk and you stare
at my mouth and my eyes, full
of attention. eating around

blueberry pie, two plastic forks moving
together bite by bite, the plate pokes
out under what looks like carnage.
hugging to say goodbye, plus

an encore, hands sliding along
each others arms as we part.

Perfect title for a piece like this. Beautiful closing stanza, too.
