Home (for National Poetry Day 2010) by Paganini Jones
Home is
cooing from the roof
echoing into the kitchen;
warm bread with blackberry jam
made at summer's end;
pans rattling to the smell
of onions chopped, sizzling,
preface to sausage
or pie;
our old black moggy
purring from Dad's chair,
winding round schoolgirl legs,
yipping to be let out;
Home is
reaching into a pocket
for promised chocolate;
laughter, dirty socks on the floor,
our Friday bath, a story
snuggled soft in blankets;
and finally
drifting to Schumann etudes
or whistled hymns;
Never mind the rest!
Home is this:
remembered warmth
and content;
a shade of green;
the whiteness of washing;
a distant song;
a lamp in the dark;
a call as of the sea
which one day
must be answered.
10/07/2010 Author's Note: The theme for National Poetry day (today in UK) is Home (still needs tightening up I think, eg witness/whiteness of washing?)

Posted by George Hoerner on 10/07/10 at 05:14 PM Ah lady, I don't think I've heard to the word "cooing" since I returned from England back in the 50's. Great write! It brings back so many memories. Thanks! |
Posted by V. Blake on 10/08/10 at 04:09 AM No one told me it was National Poetry Day! I hate finding out about these things too late. Certainly doing the day proud here though |
