Job Hunting is Not Fun

by Susan Q Tomas

I have a résumé which depicts me.
My education, work experience and volunteer experience.
I am worth something.

No one accepts a cover letter, résumé, and references anymore.
Printed out on crisp white paper, in an envelope then mailed to
Human Resources, a department within the company.

Do any local companies hire directly anymore? No.
You must submit your résumé and fill out an application.
To a 3rd party. On line. Some company in Malaysia or India.

They called me today and never even read my résumé.
How fast can you type? I am emailing you an assessment
to take on line. Titled “Prove It!” You can’t do it on your Mac.

Other jobs I have applied for require official transcripts.
From Metro State, Anglican School of Theology, and YSU.
They have been lied to by others. They say prove it!

Yes. I have peed in a cup, been finger printed,
and have passed a background check, many times.
Before they will hire me, I must do it again, for them.

I am worth something. Beyond my typing capabilities.
Beyond no criminal record or drug usage.
I am worth something.

Girl, I feel you on this one. I really do. Just got the call this evening letting me know I'm hired for the job I interviewed for this morning. I was very hopeful but scared to hope all at the same time. I thought the interview went well and they seemed to enjoy it a great deal after I broke the ice a bit by picking at them about sounding like yankees... (folks in West Virginia do think it's funny that they really do sound like yankees to me) but sometimes you just don't know. I'll say a little prayer for you. It is rough.

p.s. I LOVE your profile picture! Precious. You are worth everything to the one who created you.
