Switches

by Jeffrey Parren

this life is full of switches
waiting to be flipped
and it's all about
the reaction
or the catalyst
that makes or breaks
a person.

like on or off
things happen
and things change
with the flip of a switch.

yesterday
I dealt with the previous day's
switches
and today
is yesterday's child.

middle October 2004
a switch was quickly flicked
to off
& from this
2005 was a blur to me

and in this reaction
sent a wrinkle in time
that I still endure
but as time passes
the memories comfort
the fall I take every day
realizing she is gone.

early 2006
I took a job
and have kept it
proving my survival instinct
is still prevalent
even with all the switches
making me want
to pick up and leave.

here I am.

this time
I am flipping my own switch
for the better.

I'm no button to be pushed.
