Jana

by Leonard M Hawkes

At nine you came into my life,
Girl with sun-gold hair,
And make-believe and out-of-doors
Were the hours and days we shared.

Best of friends at eight and nine--
When gender didn't matter--
With open eyes and open hearts,
And childhood's simple laughter.

As teen years came, it was respect
That bound us still as one,
Common values found in youth
Can never be undone.

Ironically joined once again
With my call beyond the sea,
For he who'd love you most of all
Was first there loved by me.

Now life, and time and frailty
Have too quickly brought us here
Yet, friendship, love, eternal links,
Will bind us even there.

You go before, the first to leave,
Free from pain, from sorrow,
An eternal tie to a greater plan,
Now part of our tomorrow.
