Never Forget

by Meredith C Hartwell

Tomorrow is September 11.
If I burn anything, it will be a candle.
If I read, it will be a thousand names.
I will not stand in protest;
I will stand in prayer.
And if my arms hold something for the world to see,
let it be a survivor,
a first responder,
a child who never knew his mother;
not a placard.
I will have no voice for hatred;
I will celebrate the ones I love.
I will not cry out in anger;
my tears fall silently for the memory.
And I will never forget.
