Moonlit

by Daniel Peterson

Moonlit surface of the moon,
moon boot prints frozen in time—

my boyhood buoyant body floats,
endlessly adrift,
over tranquil evening scenes;

my boyhood stomach squeezes,
and contemplates
the telescoping distance between
where we are
and where we dream;

spotlit surface of the moon,
under water, turquoise and blue—

where scale-shaped rings of light
undulate,
and dance over cement surfaces;

accidental fossil records
of moonlit memories not forgotten.
