Waiting Tables

by Jeffrey Parren

Waiting tables
is an exquisite madness.

Some days
you can convince yourself
that today
you'll be relaxed
and the tips
will be just right,
but deep down
you always know the truth.

Waiting tables
is exquisitely ironic.

Some days
you are in six places at once
you can do no wrong,
the tables are served well
perfectly maybe
and the tips
are scratching at 15%.

Some days
you are being torn
into six pieces
everyone needs something
NOW
and at one point
you just want to scream
and leave
then the tips arrive
which leave 20%
in the dust
and seem
to be bestowed simply
because your stress
deems necessity.

Waiting tables
is what I do
for now.

I hope you have better luck than the men I saw in the plants of Ford years ago. Who, after 30 years, stood around the time clocks waiting for the young boys to get out and run for their cars for those with 30 years had no where better to go. Good write.
