Gauntlet

by Jeffrey Parren

This gauntlet of existence
is the homeless man
you gave a dollar to
yesterday
that today expects it again
not because he remembers you
but the 75 other people
he got yesterday
is proof that hard work pays
especially
when he doesn't pay taxes.

This gauntlet of existence
are the heavy eyes
in the beholder
that hurt from straining
and not the success of use
as the hours blend
and bleed into one another
just like the days
and soon the years.

I am already starting
to wonder where it has all gone.

You might as well start being friends with that homeless man. I think the our about to have a population explosion in this country. And time goes just where the homeless live, under the overpass. Good write Jeffrey.
