tough prescription

by Charlie Morgan

her help on the highway was weighted
with her desire for me "to pay it forward."

every moment since then has been plagued
with questions: is this the one? this the time?
can i have do-overs? might have missed a chance.

floating today on the ocean of yesterday, my sail
full and billowing, my dreams for tomorrow in tow;

we, grassblades to the lawn of life, seek water;
water of life found in others, their essence.

go distant in my thoughts, please. i'm busy thinking
of you and the ripples you make in my life. a tsunami
of answers carrying the billboard of appreciation.

i get closer and i'm awash with seeing the misunderstanding.
we see objects as real, dodge the ephemeral, the true essence.

Author's Note: We were befriended by Jennifer[Mom]and Danielle[daughter]coming back to Texas. What a delight to have met them. Instead of us paying for gas, etc. she suggested we "pay it forward"...what a delightful woman and daughter. I'm better for having met them.
