riff on a theme from Howl, I.

by Madeline Lamb

The first alarm clock fell
in 1956,
& since have rained,
reigned over us
from birth, like law
bashing our heads like her officers!

We cry:
"Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?"
Eloi, Eloi, each ash
a ring of meaning memorized

and Our Ballot for nothing!
we still live mortal,
still wound time.
