Unlovely by Ken HarnischYou must first make unlovely
What you would unlove
The poems and songs
Of a lover’s heart
Must be turned to whine and dirges
And little nits turned into lice
The cuteness of a quirk must become
The irritation of a character flaw
And physical imperfections
Morphed into gargoyles
The good times must be blurred
Before being unremembered;
Kisses that were fondues of passion
Must be brief and chaste and cold
The small things must set off volcanoes
And the big things wars
Villainy must be found in slights
And hatred in a blackened heart
And when the beloved is reduced
To char and cinders, and the ashes turn
Stone, stone cold, they can at last
Be given a eulogy that neither one will speak
And the unlovely will, at last,
Become unloved
