no one is on your side by Ava Blusuch a devastatingly lonely feeling when it's almost sunrise
and you're the only one not asleep yet
and the tv station has turned to static
and even the dog at the foot of your bed is glaring at you
as you walk by him to the kitchen
you will want a glass of milk
in hopes it can help you sleep
you will smoke one more on the porch outside
and it will begin raining
but even the rain won't help you sleep tonight
the air conditioner is holding steady at 75 degrees
you forgot to shave your legs today
so you wear pajama bottoms and you won't let the dog snuggle beside you
you're fighting the urge to drive around,
to head to the roof and jump into a pool
you are yawning but the yawns turn into annoyances
and your eyes water with fear
you are the one perpetually falling down
and no one wants to play the hero forever.

Posted by Gabriel Ricard on 07/12/10 at 01:15 PM Insomnia hits a lot of people, but I've always suspected each case is a very personal hell for that individual. Even so the hell you describe here has a brutal universal quality to it while at the same time remaining painfully intimate and specific. Wonderful stuff. |

Posted by Stephan Anstey on 07/15/10 at 02:37 PM I live this far too often. Except the unshaved legs part. I never shave my legs and i don't have a dog. |
