dis de deep end?

by Charlie Morgan

...my big mouth has cost me alot; gained
me friends. the gift that God lent me.

i finally reached a point where high is just
another perspective; on my berm, moving around my pool
Kai says, 'papaw, dis de deep enn?' 'yeah, Kai. see,
it's bluer, cause it's deeper.' 'papaw,
can i go to de deep enn sometime?'

'yeah.'

and 40 years of teaching, 60 years talking; oft' time,
seeing my mouth as a curse disguised as trouble.
so, i say to that boy, 'you sure can Kai.' a why-not grin.
'you can go to de deep enn. sure can, you sure can.'

Kids teach us a lot more than we usually admit. He'l get to the deep end just like we all have and probably teach us more. Good write Charlie.

Just put that heaven's cargo in some kind of floatie and swim him on out there. He may well share your verbosity at this age in his own life some day. Make sure you print these out for him. One day (quite out in the deep enn himself) it may be just the floatie he needs...
