A Little

by Alison McKenzie

Swallowed in that dark,
The thick, black tar of that dark,
I moved carefully forward -
A caution that resembled
Confidence more than fear.

I am not afraid of the dark,
On principle.
I am not afraid of hands,
Nor breath,
Demons,
Nor death.

The only substance available for the taking,
In that place where all light hides,
Is my body,
And frankly, if it was wanted
That badly…

I don’t mind groping,
A little.

Author's Note: To quote James "darkness lies". Indeed.

Love this. Wonderful imagery. "I am not afraid of the dark, On principle." creates a beautiful perception.

Where darkness lies, there is always a bit of apprehension no matter what our mind's eye says. Darkness implies fear, and none of us is completely fearless.
