The Act No One Wants To See

by JJ Johnson

Holding you as close as flesh can embrace felt three dimensions apart
Now I feel more than my empty hands have sensed when clenched in rage
I wasn’t satisfied with the rations that twenty years of hunger fed me
The overflow from your heart I devalued through one-dimensional desire
Evidently I am more lost than when you found me wandering naked and alone
Exposing the veil of darkness layered over hidden scars not meant to be seen
I showed them to you hoping to seem more human than the ghost of my past
Pride is a shadow sewn to cloak all I have tried to hide from attractive spectators
I am every bit the bit player in a cast of characters I push on an overcrowded stage
Failing the audition is to be expected by an extra leading without direction
Reading the script through stains on torn skins the lamb smugly rose above
Lowering my head in humility when no one is looking at the player I’ve become
Smashing the mirror that begs me to look into the eyes of blind honesty
Only to reveal there is no one looking back from the fractured shards
How pleasing their edge would be to cut through the act no one wants to see

There's a lot in this - more revealed with repeated readings. I'll be back for more.

There is something savory about almost every line. That first one though... "three dimensions apart" just sucked me right into the piece. Love that.
