butter pear

by Lauren Singer

after the easy morning love we made did its part
to make the day better, we peeled avocados in our underwear
and left the pits in the bowls so our guacamole would not spoil.

i scratched mosquito bites by pressing my heels against the callous skin of your feet
and covered your puffy bruises in the fruits of our labor.
you licked salt from my lips and stole glances
between lemon-squeezed additions and pepper grinding.

we ate off each others hands
as though we were tortilla chips and
through tequila-guzzle and finger slicks
i knew that there was something
markedly right about the sensual design
of our green painted bodies mashing limbs into
soft skin, ripe plucked from the tree and
turned into delicacy
placed in the bowl of my stomach
licked out by the spoon of your tongue.
