The unwritten rule
of the escalator
is written at airports
clearly saying
“stay to the right”

but at the Bus Terminal
there are pictures demonstrating
the etiquette of riding
even showing
that staying to the right
to allow those quicker,
in-a-hurry folk,
to pass.

The pain is exquisite
to be that person
and the laughter unending
to watch someone
blocked
by people not keeping up
with escalator etiquette.

There is a moment
of unbridled internal anguish
as you are late for work already
and just want to get down
but don't know how to say
“excuse me”
in the language they speak.

For those 12 seconds
the world might as well come to an end
because someone doesn't know
escalator etiquette
on their vacation.
