My Car Was Cool Until

by Jeffrey Parren

Driving down the highway
feeling the breeze through my hair.

Just cleaned my car
which is to say
I took it to the car-wash
and they did their magic.

The insides are wiped
and the floors without a speck.

I feel epic with the music blasting
as my shiny car cuts through this world
with reckless abandon.

A clean and beautiful car
is meant to be driven fast.

Everything is right
until I see another car,
my car, on the highway too.

I pull aside to share
in this moment of solidarity
to give the nod
or to point
“you the man (just like me).”

My car was cool
maybe even awesome
until I pull up
and an 86-year-old grandma
of 12
is driving the same exact car
that I am.

Cool no more.
