snapshot of a second

by Charlie Morgan

a boy tags along

sun striped my face as i rode rapidly,
spokes bringing life to the Queen of hearts.
constantly waving at the adoring crowds of kids
not old enough to ride a bike or have one, i king.

sliding to a stop Gilbert gets his turn to drain
the speed out of my Raleigh, prop it against the
wall of the overhang porch; saving it for Dwayne.

older Dwayne could make a siren hang in the air,
like a real firetruck all the kids said, while
i was waitin' a turn on my own bike; big cousins
from out of town get the first of everthing.

my bluest blue patchs swish while my legs churn
for tomorrow; over hills and white-flower clover,
leaving bees abuzz and them seeing me as a giant.
