i even asked Mama

by Charlie Morgan

from lawnmowers to lovers,
the want-ads plead the needs
of the forlorn and forgotten.

in my tree, three silver pigeons
argue, bob their heads, like old men.
not one volunteers to fly off first.

school zones should read: CAUTION--
the future has two legs, one heart,
one mind. let'em see the fifth grade.

i know that a thief has entered my home
during the night. though not seen or heard;
i had a rainy day calendar, it's missing.

all of this and Mama's got no answer.
