Once Upon A Dream

by Kristen Heyl

She was in once upon a fairytale
with her dream prince
and happily ever after on the horizon.

The night of the ball
she put on her most elegant gown
along with the sparkling jewels
only meant to tune down the beauty within her.

Out of the room,
down the sweeping staircase she glides
expecting to see her prince waiting for her
with a smile on his face and a sparkle in his eyes.

Her eyes scope out the room
but her prince is nowhere to be found.

She puts on a smile,
holds her head high
and it's out on the dance floor she goes.

She dances the night away with
princes from many lands
but never do her eyes stop
sweeping the room for
the prince who holds her heart.

Once the evening is done
up to her room she goes,
peels off the elegant gown
and takes off the jewels
that now hold much more sparkle
than she does.

Into the mirror she looks
and staring back at her
is a tired and defeated reflection.
Hope no longer resides in the eyes
or in the heart.

The disappearance of her prince
has taken it's toll as she sits
staring out the window of the palace.

There is a speck on the horizon
and it grows bigger as time passes.

Each minute she stares out the window
a smile grows on her face.
