Waves

by George Hoerner

waves sneak silently
toward the shore
arching their backs
as high as they can reach

at the last second
they show the tips
of their white teeth
and come crashing down
on the unsuspecting
floor of the shore

hoping this time
to stay in one place
and rest a while

but like Sisyphus
they are given
no rest and
must return
to the sea

to again lift
their heads
and arch
their backs

until time decides
to let them go
