cosmic comix

by Gabriel Ricard

We didn’t come here to pick up strangers,
or get into a screaming match that ends
with a trip to the emergency room
to get a pair of scissors out of my left kneecap.

I’m not going to draw attention
to the fact that your best friend is a guy
until about nine p.m. every night.

You guys do coke and makeup in the bathroom
and stare out the window to point, laugh and throw beer bottles
at the seizure victims ten stories below.

A lot of that has been going around lately.
Have you noticed?

God knows what could happen to us next,
the way we dance, fight and feel the need
to experience everything we write about.

By the time you get out of that bathroom
those kids from the seminary are ready
to buy neckties and pens that turn blood money
into brilliance.

Once you get those wings going
there’s no telling how many blackouts
the judge is going to find you guilty of.

I don’t have a problem with any of that.

The same way I don’t want you to go to war
with me over cigarettes or why I would just as soon
avoid a return to Crystal City for the rest of my life.

If I want to learn how to meditate
in broken elevators or on the roof of a moving cab
then that ought to be my business.

The same way you want to get rich
ripping off bald guys or get back to hell
trading body blows with the lesbians two houses up.

We didn’t come here to talk about that.

We’re here because one time we both made
a noise when that song came on the radio
for the first time since 1998.

I put my hand on your knee,
and you didn’t start sobbing hysterically.

You just told me your second favorite
pen name and ran fifty-eight red lights in a row.
