Letting Go

by Kristen Heyl

Phone call by phone call,
Day by day,
Hour by hour,
Minute by minute,
Second by second,
Thought by thought,
Memory by memory,
Tear by tear,
I am trying to let go.

Let go with my heart
of the things I hold dear
about you.
Your smile,
the way you hold me that makes me feel like nothing will go wrong,
your devotion to your friends and family including those of us who don't deserve it,
the way you go after those things you want to do
wholeheartedly and without fear,
It's all of these things that I have to let go
and my mind knows
it's for the best
but my heart doesn't
want to feel the hurt return
or the disappointment
in myself
that I have failed
in life again.

So I am going to dry the tears,
put a smile on my face
and determination in my heart
and march forward with my head held high
and make sure I live my life
the way I want and need
to ensure my success
and happiness.
