Dead Space

by Jared Orlando

Knock. Knock. Knocking.
Thump. Thump. Thumping.
Stirring, waking, blanket
In front of face, searching
Listening, smelling, inside
Yelling, the closet creaks
Heart beat. Beat. Beating.
Cover aside, tip-toe-tip-toeing
Eyes wide shut, open slow.
Slow. Slowly. Tremble to
Flick the switch, eyes creep
Open, expecting gape. Gape.
Gaping wide rows of crooked
Teeth, but see only echoing
Dead space. No monsters here
Only clothes suspended in air
Memories hung. Hung. Hanging
By the neck, all threats dangling
Lifeless and far away, a child
Can sleep soundlessly tonight.
