Never Getting Anywhere

by Beth K Hannah

I come and go like the cattails
at the edge of a pond
I move like the guppies
Swimming so desperately
But always winding up back at square one

Most mornings I hate the sounds of birds
Of the dull reminder of another
Night where I should of cared more
but my skin is too fragile for the railroad
Tracks you wish to lay down

The sun can reach its zenith
All it damn wants
because I am tired of fighting it and the moon
They always seem to know
The punchline before me
And then it is never as funny
As I thought it would be.

Just like you were never
As good as you said you would be

Like the guppies, I swim and I swim
But always find myself in the same
Spot.

If there is a way to move past
And go forward
Maybe its in the crisp, blue water
or the torrential downpour
Of my self doubt.

I can sway back and forth all I like
But one day, the birds calls won't come
and the sun will give up.
And I will be left looking for sea shells
On a beach that has never seen the sea.
