Seventy-One

by David Garner

Seventy-one
And he looks like ninety
And he once looked young for his age
My father weak and his mind confused lying in the hospital bed
When he was fifty
He looked thirty-five
Six feet tall and alive
But fifty is when he started to fall
Apart, on the ice, at the seams
Showman at heart
But Humpty Dumpty in body
My father looks old for his age

Haunting and powerfully written.
