Melyssa

by Ryan Nardi

The thought came to me
to name all kinds of tiny
flowers Melyssa

04/07/2010

Author's Note: I spotted one of the first little yellow wild flowers of spring in a patch of grass between rows in a parking lot. My first instinct was to pluck it for my girlfriend, but I decided after a moment to leave it there and name it after her instead, so that it could live its life and bring some sparkle of beauty to an otherwise desolate place--the way my Melyssa carries with her a special, gentle light. On the ride home I thought I might as well not stop with just that one flower; and so, (for me anyway) henceforth, all tiny wildflowers shall be called Melyssas.

Sounds like a pretty good plan.
