Our Bones Are Too Heavy by Aaron BlairBefore the sun sets on your life,
your body will find a thousand ways to betray you.
Some mornings, your limbs will not perform the act
of rising from the bed, listening instead to a heart
that broke itself by reaching out for what it couldn't have.
Your eyes will let loose tears that your mouth
doesn't want to taste, but still they gather,
like an angry sea, to mount an assault on your tongue.
Parts of you will remain woefully innocent,
assuming that the world stays the same for the virtuous,
that the act of being good speaks for itself.
While the bad cells multiply and rise up strong,
the other cells stupidly pray for salvation,
afraid to defend themselves against something
they can't even begin to understand.
Eventually nothing will work, not even
the hinges on the shutters of your eyelids.
Your eyes will be closed and they won't open again. 03/28/2010 Author's Note: My friend was recently diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which has a low rate of survival in adults. This is distressing, to say the least. I took the title from the song "Excuses" by The Morning Benders. It's a good song. You should listen to it, if you haven't.
