Miss Me From Afar by Ken HarnischYou say you will miss me
Well, miss me from afar
It will put pastels into the light of remembrance
And soften the glare of reality
We couldn’t quite overcome
That made this unsurprising parting
The order of the day.
I’m sure you will wonder
Where I am. If it makes you feel
Better, I will do the same. But
Only on Saturdays when
The empty hours need
Reminding of how we filled them
But couldn’t quite get it right.
Sometimes the nature of inertia
Requires that we accept it is all
A grind. What looked so promising once
Turned out to be a chore, and I’ve enough
Of them on my plate now to turn my
Weekends into a second boring job.
So do you. I can’t be holy victim here
Without acknowledging your own
Unhappiness. And while we may
Bemoan the hole we’re about
To leave in our lives, I remind you nature
Has a way of filling every vacuum
We have too much life to live yet
To surrender it to yesterday. It’s nice to
Lather up in the washrooms of nostalgia,
But after your face is clean, let’s both
Move on and make new memories
This time, with someone worth the effort.
