Another Way to Go

by Beth K Hannah

You were the pauses between syllables in my words
The way sun hits droplets of rain on my windshield
Blinding, intense, mesmerizing

At the end of the day, I could only pray
for minutes to swiftly swing by
So I could bury myself in you

I learned to speak the way you did
The way you wanted
To imitate everything
So you would want me near and by
All the time.

I gave and gave and gave
Skin cells, hair follicles
Whispers, kisses, dances
Intense joy
All my interests and hobbies
All of my heart and skin and sinew
I lost all my flesh and blood and bone to you

Just to hear you say my name.

I failed.

And now the only thing that blinds me
Is the sun as I wake up alone
In the morning.
